Copenhagen’s nightlife starts on Istedgade, a street in Vesterbro where backpackers spill out of hostel bars by 22:00. The scene isn’t just about drinking; it’s about meeting people who’ll share a bike ride to the next spot. Hostels here lean into the social side: think rooftop terraces with city views, communal kitchens that smell of cinnamon buns, and on-site bars where happy hour runs from 17:00 to 19:00. Most places offer bike rentals for about 100 DKK a day, so you can pedal between venues without breaking the bank. Stay in Vesterbro if you want to roll out of bed into a bar, or head to Nørrebro for cheaper eats and a more local crowd.

Organised nights out with a local guide
This crawl visits four bars and one club, with free shots at the first two stops. The group meets at 21:00 outside Central Station. Expect 150–200 people, mostly backpackers. The last stop is usually KB3, a club in Vesterbro that plays techno and hip-hop.
How Copenhagen's nightlife zones break down
Vesterbro is where most hostels cluster, especially around Istedgade and Sønder Boulevard. The area feels like a mix of grit and gentrification: old-school pubs sit next to hipster coffee shops. Meatpacking District, a five-minute walk from the central station, is packed with bars and clubs that stay open late.
Nørrebro has a younger, more local vibe. Streets like Elmegade and Blågårdsgade are lined with cheap eateries, vinyl shops, and dive bars. It’s less touristy than Vesterbro but still social: expect to hear Danish, Arabic, and English on the same corner. The lakes (Søerne) make for a scenic walk home after a night out.
The city centre is where you’ll find the big sights: Nyhavn, Strøget, Rosenborg Castle: but it’s also home to some of the pricier hostels. Nightlife here leans towards cocktail bars and tourist-friendly pubs. It’s central, but you’ll pay extra for the location. Walk to Vesterbro in 15 minutes if you want cheaper drinks.
